10 Instagram Story Mistakes Small Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)

Stories are where you stay top of mind, but most small businesses quietly sabotage them. Here are ten common Story mistakes and the quick fix for each.

Stories are your daily touchpoint, so don't waste them

Stories are the part of Instagram where people check in on you daily. A feed post is a billboard; a Story is a conversation. That's why small mistakes here add up fast, they quietly train people to stop watching.

I see the same handful of Story mistakes across almost every small business I look at. None of them are fatal on their own, but together they make your account feel inactive or hard to watch. Let's fix them one at a time.

The 10 Story mistakes (and the fix for each)

Work through these like a checklist. Most take a minute to correct.

    1. Not posting frequently enough

Stories disappear after 24 hours, so silence here reads as 'this business is closed.' You don't need a dozen a day, but a few Stories across the week keep you in people's minds. Aim for a small handful most days, even if it's just a quick behind-the-scenes clip.

    2. Ignoring your Insights

Instagram tells you exactly which Stories people watch, tap away from, and reply to. If you never look, you're guessing. Check Story insights once a week and notice patterns. If people always drop off on the third slide, your intros are dragging.

    3. Looking at yourself instead of the camera

When you record a talking Story, it's easy to watch yourself on screen instead of looking into the lens. The result feels disconnected, like you're not actually talking to the viewer. Look at the camera dot, not your own face. It instantly feels more personal.

    4. Not adding closed captions or text

A huge share of people watch Stories with the sound off. If your Story depends on audio and has no captions, they scroll past. Add a short text overlay or use Instagram's auto-captions. It takes ten seconds and it's the difference between watched and skipped.

    5. Not using engagement stickers

Polls, questions, quizzes, and sliders are free engagement. They give people something to tap, and every tap tells the algorithm your Story is worth showing. A salon asking 'bold or natural this week?' gets more replies than a silent photo ever will.

    6. Posting too many slides of the same topic

If one idea needs eight slides, people lose interest around slide three. Tighten it up. Most Stories land best in two to four frames. If you have more to say, split it across a couple of Stories or move it to a feed post.

    7. Not asking enough questions

Stories are a two-way street. If you never invite a reply, people forget they can talk to you. Use the question sticker, or just end with a simple question in text. 'What's your biggest struggle with ___?' turns watchers into conversations.

    8. Posting too many Stories at once

Dumping ten Stories at once overwhelms people and most won't watch past the first few. Spread them out across the day instead. Three in the morning and three in the evening beats ten all at once.

    9. Starting with 'Hey guys' or 'Hi friends'

Generic openers waste the most valuable second of your Story, the first one. Jump straight into something useful or interesting. 'Here's the one thing I check on every AC before summer' beats 'Hey guys, just wanted to hop on real quick.'

    10. Never sharing your feed posts to Stories

A lot of people only watch Stories and never scroll the feed. If you don't reshare your best posts to your Story, they miss them entirely. Add a quick 'new post' nudge with a small call to action. It's free reach.

A simple Story rhythm that holds attention

Here's a rhythm I'd actually use: one or two Stories in the morning (behind the scenes or a quick tip), one midday with a poll or question sticker, and one in the evening resharing a feed post or a customer review. That's four to five a day, spread out, and each one has a job.

The businesses that win with Stories aren't the ones with the fanciest graphics. They're the ones who show up like a real person, consistently, and give people a reason to tap back tomorrow.

If managing Stories day in and day out is the part that falls off your plate, that's a big piece of what I handle. You can see how my social media management keeps Stories active without it eating your day.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many Instagram Stories should a small business post per day?

Aim for four to six across the day, spread out rather than all at once. Consistency matters more than volume, a few Stories most days beats a flood once a week.

Do Instagram Story views matter for growth?

Story views are a sign of how engaged your current audience is, not a growth metric on their own. Pay more attention to replies, sticker taps, and profile visits from Stories than to the raw view count.
